The BET Awards are always a reason for fans to gather and cheer their idols, but also one of the most popular and important event in music. And though it honors the best acts in music, the show seems to be rather about performances than about giving shiny statues. But let’s have a recap of 2013’s BET Awards and see who were its winners and performers.

Kendrick Lamar was by far the man of the night, the only artist who took home a couple of trophies, for Best New Artist and Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. Drake was honored with the Video of the Year award for “Started From the Bottom”, but unfortunately for his fans, he was unable to grab his prize in person, motivating his absence with the fact that he’s trying to finish his new album, as well as spending some time with his family.

However, the audience didn’t cry for the singer, as Nicki Minaj took the stage to receive her trophy for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. A$AP Rocky won the Best Collaboration award for “Problems”, Rihanna took home the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist award, Miguel – the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist award, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – the Best Group, Mary Mary – the Best Gospel Artist award, Benny Boom – the Video Director of the Year award, Ice Prince from Nigeria – the Best International Act: Africa and Emeli Sandé – the Best International Act: UK.

The spate of performances that set Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre on fire were merely unexpected, hot and unforgettable. For instance, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell showed off their smooth moves for a Charlie Wilson tribute, while Stevie Wonder, Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg gave their best during the same tribute for the 60-year-old winner of the lifetime achievement award.
Brown kicked off the show with a medley of new songs, including one with Minaj, who joined him onstage and one that featured vocals from late Aaliyah. Ciara sang her catchy hit “Body Party,” Pharrell and Robin Thicke performed his current No. 1 hit, “Blurred Lines”, Mariah Carey rose the audience to its feet with her latest hit, “#Beautiful”, while R. Kelly sang snippets of a dozen of his hits. Then, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Dawn Penn, Beenie Man and Elephant Man dynamited the crowd with their colorful performance of reggae classics.

Moreover, all sorts of combinations received cheers from the fans: Mariah Carey sang with J. Cole, Minaj sang with Chris Brown and Ciara, Kendrick Lamar with 2 Chainz, India.Arie blended in with her golden and soulful voice to Wilson’s tribute and so on. Chris Tucker paid a tribute to Michael Jackson by singing and dancing, Miguel proved that anything can happen at BET Awards, 2 Chainz infused everybody with his unique charm and swagger, Tamela Mann blazed the stage and Kirk Franklin showed us his joyful swings before Janelle Monae wrapped up the night. After three hours and a half, the BET Awards show ended with Monae singing alongside Erykah Badu the beautiful and amazing “Q.U.E.E.N.”.
