The rumors are true: Feist will indeed be on the new Wilco record. Via a news update on Wilco’s website, (http://wilcoworld.net/news/), the alternative rock band says that Canadian singer-songwriter Feist lends vocals to the track “You and I” on the Nonesuch release. The guys say “Rumors and blogs regarding a guest appearance on ["You and I"] are, amazingly, quite true. Feist does indeed lend a great vocal.”
Wilco garnered media attention for its fourth album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002), and the controversy surrounding it. Wilco’s music has been inspired by a wide variety of artists and styles, including Bill Fay and Television, and has in turn influenced music by a number of modern alternative rock acts. The band continued in the alternative country of Uncle Tupelo on its debut album A.M. (1995), but has since introduced more experimental aspects to their music, including elements of alternative rock, classic pop, and Krautrock.
At the 2008 Juno Awards in Calgary, Feist was the top winner with five awards, including Songwriter of the Year, Artist of the Year, Pop Album of the Year, Album of the Year and Single of the Year. On 20 October 2008, she told the Canadian press that, following the success of her last album, The Reminder, she felt she needed to step away from the pressures of the music industry to consider her next career move and “rest for a minute”.
Well, she’s back to work now thanks to Wilco, who have spent the last several weeks mixing the album in producer/engineer Jim Scott’s Valencia, California studio. According to the band’s web posting, ten songs have been finished, though the album’s final sequence is not yet set and may not be complete. The tentative track listing for the new Wilco album is: “Deeper Down”, “Conscript” (aka “I’ll Fight”), “One Wing”, “Solitaire”, “Wilco” (the song), “Country Disappeared”, “Everlasting”, “Bull Black Nova”, “Sonny Feeling” and “You and I”.
According to recent net news, Wilco’s live DVD, Ashes of American Flags, will be released on Record Store Day (April 18) exclusively to indie retail outlets. The Nonesuch release will go on sale to all retailers two weeks later. The film was recorded in Tulsa, Okla.; New Orleans; Mobile, Ala.; Nashville; and Washington, D.C., during the band’s 2008 tour. Wilco’s 2009 summer tour itinerary includes a handful of European dates and appearances at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, Bonnaroo, and the 10,000 Lakes Festival in Minnesota.
According to Reuters, Jeff Tweedy is set to perform a rare solo acoustic set this weekend in Beacon, New York at a benefit for Pete Seeger’s Clearwater organization. Tweedy and Seeger will each play solo as well as perform a set of duets together.
