According to web sources, the wife of R&B singer Usher was released from a Sao Paulo hospital after spending 11 days recovering from a cardiac arrest she suffered shortly before undergoing plastic surgery.
A spokeswoman for the Sirio-Libanes Hospital said Wednesday that Tameka Raymond left the facility Monday night but at the family’s request, no further details were available from the medical facility, the Associated Press reports. The spokewoman spoke on condition of anonymity per hospital policy.
According to People Magazine, Ellen Dasptry, a spokeswoman for the plastic surgeon Silvio Sterman, who was to perform the “simple liposuction,” said last week that Raymond suffered a cardiac arrest while being anesthetized for the procedure at Sao Paulo’s Sao Rafael Hospital.
“When an attack like this happens, the doctors put the patient to sleep… and make sure that everything is okay and that there has not been any damage,” explains Dasptry. “This is the protocol every time and this is what was done.” Raymond was revived in less than a minute with heart massage, and was placed in an induced coma before being taken to the intensive-care unit, said Dastry. After nearly a week of recovery, she “is doing very well,” says the surgeon’s spokeswoman.
On Feb. 8, Usher’s rep Simone Smalls issued a statement on the star’s behalf: “Tameka Raymond is in stable condition after suffering complications from routine surgery in Brazil. Her husband Usher is with her at the hospital. No further details will be released, and the family requests privacy at this difficult time.”
The famous 30-year-old R&B singer was supposed to perform at music mogul Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party, but on Saturday, Usher canceled a performance to fly to Brazil to be at his wife’s side. Davis told partygoers the singer had to leave due to “serious injury in the family.” Usher and his wife were married in August 2007 and now hey have two young sons, 2-year-old Usher Raymond V and 2-month-old Naveid Ely Raymond.
The case of Usher’s wife has stirred debate within the medical world over whether a wait of two months between giving birth and undergoing liposuction is sufficiently long. Dasptry says Raymond met with her Brazilian surgeon Feb. 6 to undergo tests and was determined to be “in good health.” “In plastic surgery all over the world, there is no rule that says a woman can’t have plastic surgery performed two months after childbirth,” says Dasptry.
