Eminem made comments about Mariah long ago but Mariah finally had something to say. Mariah’s new single, “Obsessed” (written and produced by herself, Tricky Stewart and the-Dream) takes a shot at Eminem.
In Bagpipes From Baghdad, Eminem rapped, “Mariah, whatever happened to us, why did we have to break up… Nick Cannon better back the fuck up. I’m not playing; I want her back, you punk.”
You thought Mariah is more emancipated? Au contraire! She is “Obsessed.” “You’re delusional, boy, you’re losing your mind,” Carey sings over choppy synths, with a dash of Auto-Tune dabbed on her voice. “It must be weed; it must be the E… Why are you so obsessed with me? Lying that you’re sexing me.” Carey adds some more barbs, like “Telling the world how much you miss me, but we never were so why you trippin’ ” and provoking the rapper with “You’re a mom & pop, I’m a corporation. I’m a press conference, you’re a conversation.” The biting mid-tempo track is already more musically and lyrically engrossing than E=MC2’s singles.
The-Dream who co-wrote the song said, “I don’t think anybody is going to expect her to come out punching like she is going to come out,” he said. “It’s going to light the blogs up too because you don’t know who she talking about, what she talking about, but she talking about something. Mariah Carey has a record, and somebody’s going to be very upset.”
Well who else would it be The-Dream? The only person who picked first was Eminem. The Detroit rapper has made comments in his songs about their alleged affair. In which Mariah has also said something back in 2002 with a song called, “Clown” off Charmbracelet. “You should have never intimated we were lovers/ When you know very well we never even touched each other,” she sang.
“Obsessed” (which is off her upcoming 12th album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, the follow-up to last year’s E=MC2) hit Chicago’s B96 radio on Tuesday, June 16. However, if you missed her radio debut, the diva’s own official Website promises to post the song as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you follow her Twitter, you know she’s been talking about the song for days — describing it alternately as “an uptempo summer fun record,” “seriously my favorite song ever,” and “different for me, but clearly, it’s SO me!”
As for the “Obsessed” video, Rush Hour’s Brett Ratner will once again direct Carey, having already made the “We Belong Together” and “Touch My Body” clips. The video is expected out soon.
