I was browsing over some lists of the most downloaded ringtones and couldn’t help but notice that most of the top downloads were dominated by hip hip artists. For example
Nas -Hip Hop Is Dead
Snoop Dogg -That’s That (Snoop verse)
Akon -Smack That (feat Eminem)
Fergie -Fergalicious

It’s not until you get down to about 15 or so ringtones that you see
Nickelback -Far Away.

I also see that the AC/DC song “Back In Black” is a popular ringtone.

I use “Back in Black” as my ringtone and my wife uses “Lady” by Styx. Another favorite ringtone of ours is “BrickHouse” by The Commodores. Another cool tone is “Play that Funky Music”.

I think the best songs for ringtones are songs that are instantly recognizable. That’s probably why Hip Hop and rock rule the ring tone world and you don’t hear too many mellow songs that begin with a string swell. Actually I’m surprised I don’t hear more Broadway song ringtones like songs from Rent or Grease.

Hip Hop is the most popular since us more mature folk think it’s silly to spend a few dollars for a ringtone.
