On March 17th, on American Idol 2009, the Top 11, performed in the second round of the finalists competition. Randy Travis stopped by as this week’s mentor which meant that all of the songs were selections from the Grand Ole Opry. The two-hour American Idol performance episode started at 8PM on FOX.

The result of the night’s performance was Alexis’s elimination. She was placed in the bottom three, alongside country-loving Michael Sarver and teenager Allison Iraheta, but it was Alexis who received the worst news of all The 21-year-old single mother from Memphis, Tenn., Alexis Grace was kicked off American Idol as the judges refused to use the “Judges’ Save.”

Introduced last week, the judges now have a one-time-only opportunity to save a singer from being eliminated until the top five finalists are selected. If the panel unanimously agrees, no contestants will be eliminated that week, but two crooners will be out the next week. As the judges discussed her situation, Alexis Grace sang one more time Dolly Parton ’s “Jolene.” “You were the one we were thinking about saving,” Simon Cowell said. “It’s all gonna come down to this performance now”.
But things went from bad to worse, Grace was to shake off the shock after the one-time standout and learned she had received the lowest amount of votes. Then, the judges decided not to use their new veto power to override the public vote and thus, Alexis Grace will not be part of the American Idol 2009 summer tour.
“We’re kind of unanimous on this. It was good, but it wasn’t good enough,” Simon Cowell said. “Sorry. It’s the end of the line I’m afraid.”
However, before she was sent home, Paula Abdul offered some comforting advice: “You have an amazing life and career ahead of you my dear. Everything’s going to change for you,” she said.
So, the 10 finalists remaining in the competition are Sarver (”I’m gonna cry like a frickin’ baby,” he exclaimed after he learned he was safe), Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Megan Corkrey and Scott MacIntyre.
On next Wednesday’s performance show, the top 10 finalists will perform Motown tunes. Then, on next Thursday’s result show, another finalist will be sent home or possibly saved by the judges.
